Gypsum Board: A Versatile Solution for Modern Interior Construction
Gypsum board, commonly known as drywall, plasterboard, or wallboard, is a panel product used globally to form the interior walls and ceilings of buildings. Its core is primarily composed of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate), a non-combustible mineral, which is calcined to remove water and then rehydrated with additives to form a slurry. This slurry is poured between two continuous sheets of heavy paper (face paper and back paper) and allowed to set into a solid, rigid panel. The paper facings provide tensile strength and a surface for finishing, while additives in the core can impart properties like mold resistance, moisture resistance, or enhanced fire resistance. The standard manufacturing process allows for high-volume, efficient production of large, lightweight panels that are easily cut and installed.
The advantages of gypsum board over traditional wet plaster systems are profound, driving its dominance in construction. It enables fast, clean, and dry installation, dramatically reducing…
